Mission Statement

The Mission of The St. Augustine’s Project is to promote and complete the Restoration and Preservation of the Historic 1828 “Slave Galleries” located at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church on the Lower East Side of New York City and to obtain an understanding of the history and condition of the physical fabric of the “Galleries.”  Additionally, to foster the goal of creating an environment that will allow people of all backgrounds to learn about the contributions of African Americans to the growth of, as well as the cultural, economic and infra-structure development of Lower Manhattan and beyond.  Finally, to establish a museum and to promote dialogue as a powerful experience that can build understanding among peoples from diverse communities.
